Before I started working out, I didn’t understand why women should lift weights. All I wanted when I was growing up was to be “skinny” and “thin”. My friends and I would look at fashion magazines and see all the skinny girls with no muscle tone and figured “This is what beautiful should look like.” Unfortunately my body type was more muscular and I was never going to be stick thin.
I tried all kinds of diets, even a jelly bean diet (it was fat free and low calories; now I know better!), and of course, none of them worked because it wasn’t how my body was designed. Now I am older and wiser (I hope!) I realize being skinny or thin is great if that is what your natural body type is, but being strong is best.
