Hi Healthy Living Junkies!  This year,  eat healthier by buying more organic fruits and vegetables.  Here is why you should eat organic Foods.  Traditional fruits and vegetables are filled with pesticides and other harmful toxins, eliminating many health benefits from eating the fruits and vegetables in the first place. These toxins effect many parts of our bodies, including the nervous system.

The Pesticide Action Network confirms, “90 percent of lettuce tests positive for 47 different pesticides and 57 different chemical residues.” Contrary to popular myth, you can’t just wash off the pesticides. It is within the fruit and vegetable, so you can’t wash it off, soak it, or do anything to remove the toxins.  Hard to believe it, right? Try this experiment out for yourself. Grab some food coloring or color dye and put it in a cup. Put the cut end of a vegetable in the cup. Pretty crazy, right? Fruits and vegetables grown with pesticides not only are coated with the toxins, but it also soaks it up. Root vegetables and fruits and vegetable with thin skin or are delicate are particularly vulnerable to high toxicity levels.

The National Institutes of Health’s recent studies discovered, ”Only 5–10 percent of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects, whereas the remaining 90–95 percent have their roots in the environment and lifestyle.” What we put in our body directly effects our health, which is why eat organic foods.  Organic fruits and vegetables also have more nutritional value than conventionally grown foods because of better soil quality and growing conditions.

So what can you do about it? I know buying organic is expensive. In a perfect world, we would all be able to purchase all our foods organic. The alternative is to purchase organic for what is known as the “DIRTY DOZEN”, 12 of the most heavily pesticide fruits and vegetables.

Many people think organic foods are too expensive, but the truth is, it is actually more affordable than many packaged foods you buy. If you were to buy organic foods instead of junk foods, microwaveable meals, or soft drink and candy, you would be able to covert most of your foods to organic, getting rid of the toxins, pesticides, grown hormones and antibiotics from meat, and have a ton of energy in the process.

Here is an example:    Bag of chips: $3.99      vs       1 lb of Organic Apple: $1.99

 

Here are the least pesticide conventionally grown fruits and vegetables out there. If you are on a budget, these fruits and vegetables are the safest to buy through conventionally raised methods.

 

The Clean 15  (Can Buy Conventional)

Asparagus, Avocado, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Corn, Eggplant, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Mango, Mushroom, Onion, Papaya, Pineapples, Sweet Peas, Sweet Potato

 

If you buy fruits and vegetables in season, you can find very reasonably priced organic produce.  In addition to eliminating harmful toxins and chemical pesticides, it also has more nutritional value than conventionally grown product.  The best part is, it taste better!  If you don’t believe me, try it out for yourself:  Buy 1 organic fruit and buy the same fruit conventionally grown.  You will find the organic one to taste more flavorful, and the conventional fruit is a lot more bland and tasteless compared to it. Make a commitment to yourself this year to take better care of your body by eating less toxins and more organic foods!   Eating the right organic foods will also help you lose weight and shed unwanted body fat.  It’s just one of the other perks of healthy living.  Let me know if you can taste a difference between conventional and organic foods!  I’d love to hear from you! =)

Want to know the secret to weight loss success? It has nothing to do with what you eat or how you exercise; It has to do with how you think.  Your mind is a very powerful tool.  Believing you can lose the weight and having a positive attitude makes a HUGE difference on whether you are successful or not.  Of course, eating the right types of foods and exercising is important to your success. But in order to stay on track, mental commitment and a positive attitude is key.

Many people will decide to get in shape and go with a very rigid diet program and exercise regime.  The problem is, because these diets and exercise programs are so hard to stay on, you will always end up giving in to temptation.  What happens to your mind after eating that cookie or do nut?  Unfortunately for most people, you get so upset that it is common to just give up and eat the whole box, since the “diet’ is now ruined.

The key to getting in shape is to understand that life happens. Lose weight and staying in shape is a marathon, not a sprint.  If you have a bad eating day, or skip a workout, this does not make you a failure, or ruins your goal. Why Sugar is Bad for You

Is sugar the new drug?  It’s white, powdery, and deadly.  Your body craves it and when you take it, you want more and more.   No I am not talking about cocaine; I am talking about sugar, the other white drug.   Sugar is bad because you crave it like a narcotic, giving the body a “high” or “sugar rush” as it hits your blood stream.  Just like a drug, sugar makes you feel good, giving you instant energy, and then once the sugar level in your blood stream drops, you start to crash, and you end up wanting more sugar.  What are the side effects of sugar?  We all know why eating sugar is bad for you, but besides obesity and weight gain, did you know sugar can cause heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even death?  Let’s take a closer look at why sugar is bad for you.

Sugar is converted glucose in the body, which the body needs, but only in moderation.  Any excess sugar or glucose is stored as fat in the body.  Some excess fat can be seen, such as an expanding waistline or fat hanging off your arms, thighs, back, and chin.  Other areas where fat is stored you cannot see, which is surrounding your vital organs, which can be fatal with time.   Consuming too much sugar is directly linked to type 2 diabetes.  In fact, experts say over half of school-aged children will have type 2 diabetes by the time they are 18 years old due to a diet of sugary foods and drinks.  Additionally, obesity increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and other fatal illnesses.

What is considered sugar?  The obvious answer is to avoid eating anything sweet.  What most people don’t realize is white bread, rice, and other refined carbohydrates are also converted into sugar (glucose) in the body.  In fact, the affects of eating refined carbohydrates are the SAME as eating sugary foods.  Avoid sugary foods as well as refined carbs.  Instead, eat foods with natural sweeteners like fruits, or use natural sugar substitutes like Stevia, which is plant based.  Choose unrefined carbs such as brown rice, barely, steel cut oats, quinoa, and whole grains.
