Healthy Blueberry Smoothie

Hi Healthy Living Junkies!   This is Annie and Andrea and we have a delicious healthy blueberry smoothie recipe for you.  It’s our favorite blueberry smoothie recipe because not only does it taste amazing, it is incredibly good for you too! Blueberries are high in antioxidants, which is has all kinds of health benefits including cancer fighting properties, is heart healthy, and well as improves your complexion.  Beauty in a cup?  Sign us up!  Flax seed is a healthy fat and aids in digestions, and the protein powder feeds your muscles.  Bananas are a healthy carb and is also high in fiber and nutrients.  Coconut milk is a great substitute for cow’s milk, is easier to digest and is also lactose free and has a rich creamy taste.

 

 

Healthy Blueberry Smoothie

Ingredients – 2 servings – Just half the recipe for one  =)

1 cup of blueberries (frozen or fresh, we used frozen)
1 banana
1 cup of coconut milk
1 scoop of protein powder (vanilla or unflavored)
2 teaspoons of flax seed (grounded)
Stevia (to taste)

 

 

Take all the ingredients and put it into a blender.  Blend for 10-15 seconds.  Pour in a cup and enjoy!  =) Try out our Blueberry smoothie and tell us what you think!  Better yet, show us your pictures!

I am always taking about building lean muscles in my workout videos, but today, I want to share with you the benefits of lean muscles.  The reason why you want to have lean muscles is to increase your metabolism.  Muscles consume more calories than fat. One pound of muscle burns about up to 6.5 calories per hour. Muscles burn 5.5 times more calories than fat tissues, which burn about 1.2 calories per pound per hour. If you work out, a pound of muscle can consume up to 10 calories per hour!

In fact, if you were to convert 5 pounds of fat to 5 pounds of muscles, you would burn 230 calories doing absolutely nothing at all.  Muscles need calories, which is a form of energy, in order to sustain it.  Therefore, the more lean muscles you have, the faster your metabolism becomes.  The problem is, most people turn to dieting when they are trying to get in shape. Dieting actually causes you to lose lean muscles, which slows down your metabolism. Find out what you need to do instead of dieting in this , short video.

In addition to increasing your metabolism, lean muscles also add shape and firmness to your body.  Lean muscles also helps minimize cellulite and dimples on your legs and thighs by decreasing overall fat and firming up the muscles.  Want a butt that makes Jennifer Lopez jealous?  You can reshape your body simply by adding lean muscles where you desire it.  It doesn’t matter what age you are or if you have ever worked out before.  Your body is an incredible machine that is resilient and you will see results from working out in as little as a few days!

One of my favorite tricks before going out on a date or to an event is to do a mini workout before I leave.  If I am wearing a short dress, I will do some squats to get a “pump” to my legs, giving them more shape and definition while firming them up.  If I am wearing a sleeveless shirt, I will do a quick set of pushups and dips to tighten up my arms and upper body.   It is a simple trick that will give you an instant boost of confidence!

Hi Healthy Living Junkies!

Before I started working out, I didn’t understand why women should lift weights.  All I wanted when I was growing up was to be “skinny” and “thin”.   My friends and I would look at fashion magazines and see all the skinny girls with no muscle tone and figured “This is what beautiful should look like.”  Unfortunately my body type was more muscular and I was never going to be stick thin.

I tried all kinds of diets, even a jelly bean diet (it was fat free and low calories; now I know better!), and of course, none of them worked because it wasn’t how my body was designed.  Now I am older and wiser (I hope!)  I realize being skinny or thin is great if that is what your natural body type is, but being strong is best.  Strong is sexy, strong is toned, and strong is having curves in all the right places.  If you want to learn how I did it, check out this video.

When women lift weighs, they increase their metabolism, add shape and tone, while eliminating jiggly thighs, arms, and belly.  Lifting weights also makes you stronger, building lean muscles, adding shape and sexy curves to your body.  Your body feels firm and toned, and best of all, you also feel amazing!  See for yourself:  Try one of my workouts and share with me how you feel after.

I know you hear out of information out there on carbs.  How can you tell what’s  good carbs vs  bad carbs?   Simple.  If it can sit on the shelf for a long time, it is probably a bad carb.  Things like cookies, candy, muffins, refined pasta, refined cereal, are all bad carbs.   Why should you eat good carbohydrates?  Good carbohydrates keep you fuller because it is filled with fiber as well as tons of nutrition including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.  Some even have cancer fighting properties too!

 

Bad Carbs
 

How can you tell if something is a good carb?  It is usually fresh, not processed and does not come in a package.  The exceptions to the rule are whole grains, whole grain bread with more than 3-5 g of fiber per serving, and whole grain cereal or oatmeal.  Look out for “fake healthy foods”  such as a “healthy bar” with added in fiber.  The best types of good carbs comes from fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and complex starches.  Learn more about good carbs in this video.

Good carbs can also help with weight loss by boosting your metabolism. Love bread?  Here is one my favorite healthy whole grain bread.  It is dense and filling and has lot of fiber to keep you full and satisfied.

Every once in a while, even a fitness girl needs lose the workout clothes and dress up.  The best way to dress up the eyes is with a coat of mascara.  As we all know, finding the right mascara that doesn’t run or smear can be a challenge. Here is a video on my all time favorite mascara. The winner of the Best Mascara Review may surprise you.  If eyes are the window to the soul, then mascara are the curtains… or something like that.

Products reviewed:

Maybelline Great Lashes: $5 from the drug store. It is just like department store brands, but at a fraction of the price.

Maybelline Great Lashes Waterproof: Great product but hard to build volume. I have a trick to build volume in the video.

Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara (green tube): Didn’t really like this product b/c it dried out too fast.

Almay Get Up & Grow (white tube): I liked the consistency, but didn’t really see a big difference in my eyelash length.

Hi Healthy Living Junkies!  This year,  eat healthier by buying more organic fruits and vegetables.  Here is why you should eat organic Foods.  Traditional fruits and vegetables are filled with pesticides and other harmful toxins, eliminating many health benefits from eating the fruits and vegetables in the first place. These toxins effect many parts of our bodies, including the nervous system.

The Pesticide Action Network confirms, “90 percent of lettuce tests positive for 47 different pesticides and 57 different chemical residues.” Contrary to popular myth, you can’t just wash off the pesticides. It is within the fruit and vegetable, so you can’t wash it off, soak it, or do anything to remove the toxins.  Hard to believe it, right? Try this experiment out for yourself. Grab some food coloring or color dye and put it in a cup. Put the cut end of a vegetable in the cup. Pretty crazy, right? Fruits and vegetables grown with pesticides not only are coated with the toxins, but it also soaks it up. Root vegetables and fruits and vegetable with thin skin or are delicate are particularly vulnerable to high toxicity levels.

The National Institutes of Health’s recent studies discovered, ”Only 5–10 percent of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects, whereas the remaining 90–95 percent have their roots in the environment and lifestyle.” What we put in our body directly effects our health, which is why eat organic foods.  Organic fruits and vegetables also have more nutritional value than conventionally grown foods because of better soil quality and growing conditions.

So what can you do about it? I know buying organic is expensive. In a perfect world, we would all be able to purchase all our foods organic. The alternative is to purchase organic for what is known as the “DIRTY DOZEN”, 12 of the most heavily pesticide fruits and vegetables.

Apples, Celery, Sweet Bell Peppers, Peaches, Strawberries, Nectarines, Grapes, Spinach, Lettuce, Cucumbers, Blueberries, Potatoes, Kale (#13), Collard Greens (#14)

Many people think organic foods are too expensive, but the truth is, it is actually more affordable than many packaged foods you buy. If you were to buy organic foods instead of junk foods, microwaveable meals, or soft drink and candy, you would be able to covert most of your foods to organic, getting rid of the toxins, pesticides, grown hormones and antibiotics from meat, and have a ton of energy in the process.

Here is an example:    Bag of chips: $3.99      vs       1 lb of Organic Apple: $1.99

 

Here are the least pesticide conventionally grown fruits and vegetables out there. If you are on a budget, these fruits and vegetables are the safest to buy through conventionally raised methods.

 

The Clean 15  (Can Buy Conventional)

Asparagus, Avocado, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Corn, Eggplant, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Mango, Mushroom, Onion, Papaya, Pineapples, Sweet Peas, Sweet Potato

 

If you buy fruits and vegetables in season, you can find very reasonably priced organic produce.  In addition to eliminating harmful toxins and chemical pesticides, it also has more nutritional value than conventionally grown product.  The best part is, it taste better!  If you don’t believe me, try it out for yourself:  Buy 1 organic fruit and buy the same fruit conventionally grown.  You will find the organic one to taste more flavorful, and the conventional fruit is a lot more bland and tasteless compared to it. Make a commitment to yourself this year to take better care of your body by eating less toxins and more organic foods!   Eating the right organic foods will also help you lose weight and shed unwanted body fat.  It’s just one of the other perks of healthy living.  Let me know if you can taste a difference between conventional and organic foods!  I’d love to hear from you! =)
